This is a stunning rare Whitefriars heavy handblown ruby vase/bowl with raspberry prunts**, identical to that shown by Prof. Adrian Franklin as part of his own extensive Whitefriars collection, showcased in a repeat episode of the Australian TV show “Collectors” aired recently by the ABC (see photos of stills from my recording of the show), and personally confirmed as such to me by Prof. Franklin himself, to whom I extend heartfelt thanks for his time.
(Adrian Franklin, one of the three regular panelists on “Collectors”, is a highly regarded Professor of sociology and an authoritative, eclectic collector of selective high-end items from the 50’s to the 70’s .)
Despite extensive research on my part, I was unable to identify the designer of the vase/bowl - and out of respect for Prof. Franklin’s time, I refrained from imposing on him for any further information beyond his confirmation that the vase is indeed a Whitefriars identical to his own.
The vase/bowl has the appropriate polished circular pontil mark to the base and, given the lack of documentation available, would appear to be an extremely rare example - quite possibly a limited studio piece…
