ADJA-EWE Figure (Bénin) 21cm 8.2 The Ewe, who live in southern Togo and Ghana are the eastern neighbors of Asante. They are probably best known for their textiles and also for small wooden dolls called venovi or venavi which are used like the Yoruba people in Nigeria used Ibeji twin figurines, for protection of survivor after death of a twin. Some scholars state that they are also used as children s dolls as well as sometimes used as fertility dolls by women who keep these dolls under their mattresses or were worn under the skirts of young women to ensure fertility. Scarifications and added clothing and strings of beads reveal family and clan religious and social affiliations. *********************** LE CULTE DES JUMEAUX On retrouve la pratique de la représentation posthume (après la mort) des jumeaux au sud du Togo, au Bénin, au Ghana et au Nigeria, dans les foyers de personnes qui ont eu des jumeaux décédés ou qui sont eux-mêmes des jumeaux ayant perdu leur frère ou leur sœur. Ce sont les croyants vaudouculte antillais qui mêle à la fois la sorcellerie, la magie et les rituels chrétiens. qui divinisent les jumeaux et en font un culte. La statuette est sacralisée lors de cérémonies particulières faites par les prêtres ou spécialistes du culte des jumeaux. Le vénavi est fabriqué à la perte d’un ou des deux jumeaux.
